The Old Mill by MoonlightAlbert Pinkham Ryder - circa 1885
Ryder is one of my favorites, unfortunately he experimented with materials so much (mixing his pigment with mayonnaise for example) that many of his pieces have completely fallen apart or turned black.

I love these books so.
A while back I was thinking about posting images/illustrations from them but the titles completely left me. Thanks to animalhearts for posting those Stephen Gammell illustrations. I used to read these all the time as a kid; the stories/pictures are still absolutely terrifying to me. There’s just something about them that makes them SO good.

Omens in the Sun: This manuscript of the mid-nineteenth century, possibly of Sgau Karen origin (the Karen are a minority people in the mountainous parts of Burma), shows various appearances in the sun, the moon, clouds, etc., and indicates the primarily bad omens these appearances foretell.
